I read a book last year called The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. One of the main questions she guides us to ask ourselves about anything we are de-cluttering is, “Does it bring you joy?” After the floods in Montreal, I had to go through an area of the house that was damaged which was a storage area. Quite a few of our things were damaged but there were some things that were not. Instead of just throwing out all the damaged goods, I decided to look through everything and ask myself, “Does this bring me joy?” I was shocked at how much stuff I hung on to that had long ago stopped giving me joy.

I sifted and sorted my way to creating space. And as I looked at the cleaner space, I felt lighter, freer, knowing I have just what I need. I gave away the stuff that no longer gave me joy.

I like to think that somewhere, the things I let go of are making someone else feel joy.

When you let go of something that no longer serves you, you create space for something else that will. So, let go of that thing, that thought, that relationship, that client, that project to let it find someone that will be overjoyed to have it. Now you can invite in what you are looking for!

Noticing joy is the first step to creating what you want. It’s a powerful filter for how you make decisions.
