I invite you to sit quietly and read the following poem. Take a few deep breaths to slow yourself down and focus your attention for the next minute.
Love After Love
By Derek Walcott
The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.
Now, close your eyes and allow yourself to savor the words and the experience of the poem. What did it bring up for you? Possibly a smile, maybe a tinge of sadness, maybe a wisp of hopefulness? Whatever your experience, you’ve just been mindful and connected with your self.
If you have some inspiration, take action in alignment with that inspiration.
Reading a poem is just one way to have a little intimate moment with yourself. A simple, mindful practice to stay connected.
Hope you enjoyed it 🙂
