Last time I talked to you about the benefits of being intentional in your life as a way of focusing your mind and a more likely way of staying in alignment with what you desire in your life. Intention has a present and forward feel to it, don’t you think? Today I want to expand the present and go a little deeper. (Stay with me here, the journey is worth it!)
Mindfulness is all about the awareness that arises by paying attention in the present moment, on purpose and non-judgmentally. (I’ll probably repeat that a thousand times because it is so simple yet many of us don’t do it!) You see, the nature of the mind is to wander off. It’s like the ocean. It comes in waves. Mindfulness or meditation shows you if you drop below the agitation of the mind (the waves), focus on the breath, you’ll connect with smoother waves. The waves of thought will always be there but you get less distracted by them. Make sense?
A mindfulness practice increases your ability to get to the most undisturbed, open and creative frame of mind on demand.
Ok now I have your attention!
When you get up out of bed, be aware of who and how you are. Are you slow as a slug, or grumpy and resentful? Are you already into your to-do list and negotiating your schedule? Stop! What is the nature of your mind? This is an important inquiry as you begin each of your days.
Instead, take a moment, connect with your breath, say, “Oh ya, a brand new day. I’m alive!” Get out of bed and get into the shower being mindful. Brush your teeth mindfully. Take 10 minutes (even if you have to tag-team your partner every other day) and just breathe, focusing on lengthening your inhale and exhale. C’est tout!
There are many studies that show even more positive effects of meditation and mindfulness for physical and mental health including better attention, focus, lower blood pressure, better digestion, and improved emotional states.
What I find most powerful though is this… with just a bit of practice, you will wake up one day and wonder why the heck you didn’t start sooner! “What was I thinking? This feels so good!” is what most of my clients are saying 😉
So I want to make it easy for you. And I’ve never done this before in a blog. But today, I’m feeling like I want to connect right now!
