By now, if you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I choose to live a mindful and soulful life. So when it comes to starting the New Year I say, “Resolutions, Shmesolutions!” Of course I say this with a wink and a smile because I have so been there, done that. I also know that some of your habits are stronger than your wills. So today I’m going to take you in what I think is a powerful direction.

Intention.

With setting an intention, you’re putting focus, or mindful attention, on an aim or purpose. It’s a powerful kind of reinforcement of what you desire in life.

Two things occur when you set an intention and review it daily. One is that you begin to train your brain to adapt to a new way of thinking and two, you begin to identify with the vision of your life that is set in the intention. This is a very practical and powerful skill to create transformation in your life.

Creating an Intention for the Year

When you are creating your intentions for the year, think through how you want to feel in your body, emotions, mind and spirit.

It may be:

I intend to feel lighter and more energized.

I intend to cultivate more love and compassion.

I intend to be mindful.

I intend to make space to listen to my soul.

These are just examples. You can be more specific if that feels better to you. What you are intending here is to replace resistance, chaos, drama, and struggle with an easier way of living.

Now for the pièce de résistance! To increase an intention’s power, bring your attention to your intention in your daily routine. (That’s a mouthful but emphatic!)

When you wake up in the morning is the best time to quietly sit for a few moments to set your Inner Guidance system for the day. Repeat your intentions to yourself slowly and reverently. I like to take a few deep breaths, put my hand on my heart and repeat my intentions. If you already do a meditation practice, you can sit quietly at the end of your practice and recite your intentions before getting on with the day. (You can put your hand on your heart here too!)

Be mindful how you do this. As you recite each intention, for example, notice any body sensations you might have. Your chest might feel more open or a chill might go up and down your spine with excitement. No judging, just accept each moment with your intention.

Now off you go my masterful companions… with renewed intention and love in your life!
